Welcome to Fairfields, a learner-centred school, keeping the individual learner and his or her future life chances at the heart of all our thinking and planning. Fairfields opened as a County Primary School in September 1974. Due to the school’s popularity and to answer the demand for more primary places in the area, the school underwent a major expansion project in the late 1990s. Work finished in July 2000 to convert Fairfields to a two-form entry school. We now have sixty children in each year from Nursery to Year 6. The school also manages a Pre –School (Little Fields) which caters for children from two years and six months up to Nursery age. Finally, we run a very successful Breakfast and After School Club for Fairfields children. We are very pleased with our modern school buildings. We have both large and small halls equipped for PE, which are used for assemblies, drama, and other activities. Our Friends of Fairfields Parents’ group frequently use the hall for fund-raising events in the evenings and weekends. We have a central ICT suite with thirty-two networked computers. These are used by all classes. As well as computers in classrooms we also have a class set of iPads and wireless notebook computers for children to use in lessons. We have a large dining area and Learning Support Base. There is a reprographics room for staff use and a kiln. We have a dedicated Arts Block used for Art and D & T. We have just opened our new Studio (completed March 2014) where we can deliver instrumental music lessons as well as drama and dance sessions. Outside there is an extensive playing field and three playgrounds. In one corner a conservation and gardening area has been set up. An adventure trail has been installed thanks to fund-raising by parents, and all classes get to use it on a rota basis. We have an all year round outside Early Years area equipped with lots of appropriate play equipment and resources. In recent years permanent canopies have been installed over play areas outside classrooms to extend the learning areas. A cycle shelter has been installed to encourage healthy cycling to school. The school is extremely well-equipped, thanks to careful financial control by the governing body and support from our parents. Classes are very well resourced with teaching equipment and books. All classrooms have interactive whiteboards and state of the art teaching equipment. Our Friends of Fairfields have bought and maintain two minibuses for the school. They fully conform to all current seatbelt and driver legislation. We use them extensively for local trips and visits. Security is very important to all of us. As well as having phones in all teaching areas for emergencies, we also operate a cctv system that monitors all entrances and outside areas. In 2009 all the school perimeter fencing was upgraded and high gates installed at our playground entrances to deter intruders. We all feel very safe! We value the children’s contributions to our daily school life and listen to the views and ideas that are generated by them. Our student council has been established for over 10 years and enables the children to play an active role in school developments. Each year the Student Council is formed of pupils from years 2 to 6. The Student Council have their own budget and contribute to the development of the school infrastructure and its environment. The Student Council also determine the charities that the school supports. Finally, we consider Fairfields to be a happy school.
